Weight: did not weigh Exercise: 40 minutes of swimming + 20 minutes of running at triathlon practice Cost: $0 How I feel generally: I am feeling pretty good in general but ... see below How my tummy feels: Just like Sunday, everything going right through me. I forgot to take a Lactaid pill with the ice cream Extras: One coffee, two bananas, some jalapeño Cape Cod potato chips, baby carrots, 2 Safeway oatmeal raisin cookies I completely forgot to take a photo. Oops. Swimming and running felt great today, although my body is still a little unhappy about the half-marathon on Sunday. I just want to note - yes, I am lactose intolerant and the ice cream from yesterday messed my stomach up because it has a lot of lactose, but I have not needed Lactaid this month because the cheese on my pizza hardly has any lactose! Cheese is the casein from milk without the whey (which has the majority of the lactose) and it is also fermented, so any lactose left in there is most likely fermented to lactic acid. If you are just lactose intolerant and not dairy intolerant, you can still eat hard cheeses! Slice Count: 7 (3 California pizza kitchen slices + 4 homemade slices of cheese pizza)
Weight: 133 lbs Exercise: 1.5 hours strength training and calisthenics (I finally did a pistol squat!) Cost: $2.13 How I feel generally: GETTING SICK OF PIZZA How my tummy feels: fine Extras: One coffee, one Ben & Jerry's chocolate coated cookie dough ice cream bar, some canned pears, a banana, some baby carrots I just realized I didn't have plain cheese pizza this month so I had to squeeze that in. Target pizza crust, Ragu pizza sauce, and mozzarella + a little parmesan. I already had all of the ingredients except for the crust. That cheese pizza was good but oh my gosh, I'm so sick of pizza. I would love some Thai food or Chinese food. Anything but pizza, really. Slice Count: 6 (3 large slices of HomeRun pizza + 3 slices of California Pizza Kitchen barbeque chicken pizza)
Weight: n/a Exercise: Ran 13.1 miles + 1 mile walk (car was 0.5 miles away) - first time exercising since Tuesday, yikes Cost: ~$5 (frappuccino) How I feel generally: Excited for my first time to Central America and to a coffee farm! How my tummy feels: Let's just say everything is going straight through Extras: One coffee, one Starbucks green tea frappuccino (I consumer too many non-water beverages), small handful of jelly beans, two bananas, one slice of watermelon, 3 orange quarters, one Clif nut butter bar, one Kashi granola bar Not drinking water the day before this race was a huge mistake. I knew that but I don't like to drink water when I'm flying because I hate airplane bathrooms. Then I had to drive, so I still didn't drink much water. Anyway - here's what happened: I did great for the first 10 miles of the half. My body was like, "YAY we get to run again!" after not exercising for several days. However, it started to object as the race wore on. My body was talking to me, like, "Molly, wtf, you can't drag me around another country for several days without exercising or drinking much water and then drag me up here to run 13 miles!" Yeah, I didn't feel great around mile 10/11. My time was 75 minutes (1 hour 15 mins) at Mile 10, which is an average of 7:30 mins/mile pace, and then everything started to go downhill from there except for the race course, unfortunately. I cramped up really badly, especially my calf muscles, and ended up kind of PE shuffling my way to the finish line for the last 5 kilometers. My final time was 1 hour 49 minutes. Oh well. I guess I'll have to get a half-marathon PR on a week when I didn't just travel to a developing country and when I'm actually hydrated. Sorry about the photo, by the way - I was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture of the frozen California Pizza Kitchen pizza until I'd already eaten some. Slice Count: 5 (5 large slices of HomeRun pizza with canadian bacon, olives, and mushrooms)
Weight: n/a Exercise: Walked from one airport terminal to another ;) Cost: $21.94 How I feel generally: Still pretty happy about all of the cool stuff that happened on the trip How my tummy feels: normal (WOOOO NO TRAVELER'S DIARRHEA!) Extras: One airplane coffee, two Clif Nutbutter bars, a banana, tiny salad at the United Club in between flights I flew back from Nicaragua in the morning. It was an amazing trip. I had to give my entire presentation in Spanish, which was interesting considering I hadn't really spoken much Spanish in the last five years. The three-day hiatus (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) from pizza sort of ruined my appetite for pizza. I got a taste of the outside world (tostones, queso fresco, and pinolillo, anyone?) and I did NOT want to go back to pizza!!! However, this may have actually been one of the best pizzas I had this month. I really liked this place. They had a lot of Italian herbs in their sauce and their crust was the perfect texture. They didn't have very many vegetable toppings though. I flew back into San Francisco and arrived in the early afternoon, then rented a car and drove up to the Arcata, California area, deep in the redwoods, for my half-marathon that I had planned with a friend. I stopped at a place in Santa Rosa along the way called HomeRun Pizza, for pizza lunch and dinner. I didn't really eat much before that today because I don't like to spend money on overpriced food when I travel. Here is some proof that angles and lighting and poses and outfits really do make a difference. On the left is a photo from just before starting the pizza diet, and on the right is a photo from today (May 2nd), 23 days deep in pizza. I'm not sure it's fair to compare them, but you can at least get an idea of the product of 23 days of pizza + exercise. In the photo on the left, I was not exercising as much this winter as I normally do, and I was stressed out at the end of last quarter (the end of March), so I was probably stress overeating. Also, I had just spent time at the pool so I was a little tanner, but the lighting is also more orange (you can tell from my hair color). On the right, I weigh pretty much the same, maybe a pound or two less, and I feel more toned. Yay pizza! (Okay, the pizza fueled me to exercise) Slice Count: 5 (5 large slices of homemade Mexican pizza)
Weight: 132 lbs (dehydrated I think) Exercise: Run Cost: $0 How I feel generally: Excited for my first time to Central America and to a coffee farm! How my tummy feels: fine Extras: One coffee, two granola bars, one apple, one pack of fruit snacks You guys, I AM SO EXCITED FOR NICARAGUA! I leave tonight on a red-eye from San Francisco. I am not sure how much control I will have over what I eat there, so I am taking a three-day hiatus (maybe four) from the pizza diet. At this point, I am 23 days into the experiment and I feel perfectly okay. I'm not even really sick of pizza, although the thought of other food is SUPER appealing right now. Can I get some Thai food? Or... I guess I'll try the local cuisine in Nicaragua, so that should be fun. I think if I hadn't been putting any toppings on the pizza these last few weeks and I was only eating cheese pizza, or pizza with meat, it would probably be a different story and I would be sick of pizza or feel sick. However, I feel like I've been able to get a surprising amount of vegetables and fruits, especially since I'm supplementing my pizza meals with snacks in between. I was just eating leftovers today, so no new pizza pic. I did include a progress pic (unfortunately the before picture was taken at a different gym from the after pic so there is different lighting). Slice Count: 6 (6 large slices of homemade Mexican pizza)
Weight: 134 lbs (but it's that time of the month and I always put on a couple of pounds during that week of the month) Exercise: 2 mile run + 1 hour strength training Cost: $4 How I feel generally: Irritable How my tummy feels: Bloated but it's because of my uterus. Not the pizza. As my sister says, pizza is loyal. Pizza would not do that to me. But maybe black beans from Mexican pizza would. Extras: One coffee, one boba tea, one tiny slice blueberry cake (labmate's birthday), one Kashi granola bar, chocolate milk I have been frantically working and running around trying to prepare for Nicaragua. Dad is still here but leaves Tuesday. I leave Tuesday, too. There are no pictures today. I'm still eating Mexican pizza. Forever. It's yummy though! Slice Count: 8 (2 medium Domino's slices + 1 medium slice from Village Bakery + 2 small slices s'mores dessert cookie pizza + 3 personal pizza slices of vegetarian Paesano's pizza)
Weight: did not weigh Exercise: 2 hours hiking at Lake Berryessa Cost: $14.98 How I feel generally: Pretty good! The weather is finally getting gorgeous again after 4 months of rain. How my tummy feels: a little discomfort (I think my stomach forgot how to handle fruit) Extras: Two coffees, one Clif nut butter bar, one banana, some strawberries, one blood orange margarita My poor dad has kind of been following the pizza diet too since he's visiting and we've been eating together every meal. At least when we go to a restaurant, he can order something else, or at home, he can eat cereal for breakfast. Otherwise, all I have to offer is leftover pizza. Sorry, Dad! We went on a hike this morning (I fueled up on dessert pizza with fruit for breakfast) and then had leftover pizza for lunch. I worked in lab the rest of the day and then we went to Paesano's again for dinner. I couldn't help it, I had really wanted the vegetarian pizza and this time I was allowed to have a drink (I couldn't yesterday because I had triathlon practice). All in all, a good day :D |
